Prescription Tips #1

Matte-coated paper has a clay coat; it is different from glossy. Matte-coated paper can be blended whereas glossy paper can not.

To add oil to watercolor pencils, spray tips lightly with WD-40 as needed.

Oil Pencils are primarily used on wood and must be sealed. If using on a decorative piece fast drying Tole spray is okay. If it is a utilitarian item such as a tray, polyurethane finishes are recommended.

Pearlescence ink (calligraphy ink) can be used on fabric. It can also be uses to touch up silk flowers. It may also be used on a mailbox, file cabinet, charms etc. but keep in mind you will get a transparent image.

To pop popcorn inside glass ornament, place inside of paper bag first. Pop one minute. About 20 kernels usually fill small ornament.

When painting on dark fabric, use white paint first. Let dry completely.

When you paint with color, you will get richer, truer colors.

Place piece of fine grade sandpaper under fabric when painting or stamping to help prevent fabric from moving or sliding.

Fabric medium mixed with acrylic paint will stay soft when dry. Acrylic alone dries hard on fabric.

Use freezer paper on fabric as a template. Cut design in center of a piece of freezer paper. Place waxy side onto fabric and iron to hold template in place. Paint over cut out design and lift up before paint has completely dried. This will leave clean edges.

Gum turpentine

Copy item on copy machine with toner. Place face down on fabric. Pour small amount of Gum turpentine into spoon and gently spill and rub over area. Will transfer carbon onto fabric. (By using a spoon you won’t have hard edges.) Test fabric first. Use sparingly.

Clean brayer off onto your envelope and it will give a soft background. (see next prescription)

When stamping on the outside of envelopes, place a piece of cardstock inside. This way you will have a flat surface unaffected by the back flap.

To keep dye-based ink from staining stamp, first ink with clear pigment ink. This won’t affect stamping but will protect the rubber.

If you run out of embossing tinsel make your own by mixing very fine glitter with coordinating color embossing powder. Shake well before each use.
